2014 Costume Contest Info

We are pretty quickly approaching the con again this year so I wanted to knock out a short set of guidelines for the costume contest…These are pretty much the same rules as last year with a few tweaks..

Those of you who have been here before know that we kinda like to keep a fairly relaxed environment around this contest even though the prizes are pretty substantial. We try not to take it too seriously… Anyway, with that in mind.. Here are the rules as they currently stand…

Official judges are as follows:

  • Drew Curtis – Owner of Fark.com
  • Tyler Phillips – Garrison/Con liaison for the Midsouth garrison of the 501st Legion
  • Nicole Marie Jean – Cosplay Guest
  • Ani-mia – Cosplay Guest

Official Costume Contest Rules and Guidelines
• Awards - First Place - $1250.00   Second Place - $500.00  Third Place - $250.00   - The judges may also award several smaller sub-category winners if they deem that someone should be recognized for anything outside their normal judging criteria. (i.e. Last year they gave out a “craftsmanship award” just because they had someone whom they though deserved to be recognized.)

• All contestants must have hand made the majority of their costume!

• Reference pictures are ALWAYS a good idea.

• NO REAL weapons of any kind – No real swords or guns permitted. Guns must have orange blaze at the tip of the barrel.

• No liquids, glitter, confetti, or anything else that makes a mess. When you leave the stage, parts of your costume should not remain.

• All costumes must be modeled after an American comic book character, TV or movie character, or Video Game character. Anime characters are also permitted but absolutely MUST be accompanied by reference material. Mash ups are permitted..

• Costume contest is limited to 100 contestants. You may sign up for free online via our “ticket” page now. We have pre-booked 65 contestants online and accept up to 35 more “walk-ins” the day of the con.

• At noon on Saturday all contestants should report to the Heritage pre-function area for prejudging. During prejudging judges will speak with contestants and get an idea about how you made your costume and take a peek at your craftsmanship up close.

• Contestants will be judged on several factors including the percentage of the costume that is handmade, prop making, overall quality, overall looks, likeness to the reference material, crowd appeal, and stage presence.

• Contest starts at 1pm sharp on the Prefunction area stage - Judges will score in each of the 7 categories above on a scale of from 1-10 and scores will be added to select winners.

Unofficial “common sense” rules for the LCTC costume contest (and for life in general)
• While this costume contest has substantial prizes, we pride ourselves in having fun and not taking ourselves too seriously. Please note that the judge’s opinions are just that and are non-negotiable. LCTC and all of our judges reserve the right to judge as we see fit and we may or may not agree that your Wolverine costume is better than someone else’s superman costume. Sportsmanship folks…They teach it in kindergarten.

• If your weapon could REALLY hurt someone, we will likely call it a REAL weapon and make you leave it in the car.

• I hate to even say this but since this is a limited space contest, please do not sign up if you know that you have no chance whatsoever of winning. It will not be cute to see you knock someone who really makes an effort out of a spot simply because you want to show off your spider-man Halloween costume.

• Nude is not a costume. Skimpy/sexy/edgy is probably OK but you know when you have crossed the line. If you wouldn’t want your grandma to see you out wearing it, don’t wear it.

• HAVE FUN, HAVE FUN, HAVE FUN…

2014 Schedule is out!

We have decided to go ahead and turn loose of the 2014 schedule as it stands now. Ideally, the only changes that will be made between now and the con will be the possibility of further programming additions..

Anyway - the working schedule can be found at the link below!

http://www.lexingtoncomiccon.com/Schedule2014.html

Night life at LCTC 2014!

I just wanted to give you guys the heads up on all of the awesome night life we have planned for this year at LCTC.

For starters, on Friday night we will be open for our VIP preview night on the convention floor until 10pm. VIP ticket holders are encouraged to check in and get their badge and such at this time, then come on in and get all those hard to get autographs before the crowd gets there.

After the floor closes at 10pm we will have a Friday night ice breaker in the Pre-function area of Heritage Hall. We will have a live performance by the amazing local party band “Freddy and the Cruegers” and cash bars set throughout the Pre-function area!  This is a costume encouraged but optional event. The party runs till midnight!

On Saturday night, we have a few real treats for you! The Saturday night VIP costume party kicks off at 8pm in the Patterson Ballroom on the ground floor of the Hyatt. This event is for VIP ticket holders only! The evening will start at 8pm with 2 hours of DJ’ed music by the Rockstar - DJ Tre! DJ Tre is one of the horror convention scenes most amazing cosplayers and will be spinning some awesome club music to warm you up for the evening! His performance may be highlighted by a special guest appearance by the Green Ranger, Jason David Frank!

At 10pm on Saturday night, we are honored to tell you that we will be treating you to a show from national recording artists and Kentucky’s own BLACK STONE CHERRY!  BSC is an amazing southern rock band that has become really good friends of the con over the past year or so and I am amazed to finally be able to bring them here! I hope you will all come out and check them out from 10-midnight in the Patterson ballrooms. Bring your VIP or guest badge and your ID showing you are over 21 for admittance into the ballroom. Cash bars will be open both in the ballroom and around the facility. Costumes are optional but encouraged!

Pro-tip - The room will be loud and crowded Saturday night and the party may spill out into the mall itself. There will be plenty of party to go around.
